Mission Statement

To promote the conservation of biodiversity and the growth of environmental awareness in the Amazon.

About This Cause

In the 1980s large areas of forests were replaced by pastures in the Amazon. At that time, the rubber tappers' movement in Acre joined forces to fight against the devastation and to guarantee the right of ownership of their lands. Moved by the resistance of rubber tappers, on Sept. 30th, 1988, in the city of Rio Branco, Acre state, social movement representatives, including the activist and rubber tapper Chico Mendes, founded the SOS Amazônia Association, which had as main objective to defend the extractive cause and protect the Amazonian Forest, supporting traditional peoples. In three decades, the institution operates in Acre and Amazonas, in addition to border areas, with the participation of approximately 5 thousand families. This area of action includes, mainly, Conservation Units, such as the Serra do Divisor National Park and the Alto Juruá Extractive Reserve, attributing to SOS Amazônia a large and important history of initiatives to maintain forests and improve people's living conditions that inhabit them.
