Mission Statement
The Biodiversity Research Institute (IPBio) is a place where research meets conservation. IPBio is a non-governmental, non-profit organization that develops and supports projects in environmental education and scientific research on biodiversity, ecology as well as on the behavior of species of fauna and flora of Brazilian ecosystems. We seek to apply our research as a tool for conservation by bridging the gap between biodiversity research and the general public through: environmental education; citizen science as well as publications, eBooks and documentaries directed at the lay public. In addition to the research and education activities, IPBio’s mission is to encourage conservation, management and sustainable use of natural resources; and promote the development of eco-tourism and cultural projects.
About This Cause
Headquartered in São Paulo, IPBio launched its first Biological Research Center, located in Betary Reserve, a 60 hectares preserved area, in 2007 in the municipality of Iporanga. Situated in the Ribeira Valley, the region is home to the largest remaining contiguous area of Atlantic Forest in Brazil. Only 7% of the Atlantic Forest remains and 21% of what is left is in our region. The work done in the Betary Reserve has received international recognition. In 2009, the reserve received accreditation as an advanced outpost of The Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. Currently, IPBio - Betary Reserve develops research papers related to fauna and flora of the Atlantic Forest and studies the phenomena of bioluminescence in mushroom of our region. In addition, we maintain visitation programs for students, tourists and visitors to our reserve. In the field of environmental education, IPBio conducts activities and courses for students, environmental consultants, teachers as well as biology, ecology, conservation, natural resource management, field research and environmental science professionals. In the long term, IPBio plans to construct reserves with research centers in all 5 of major Brazilian ecosystems and we are already in the process of constructing our second center in the Amazon.
