Mission Statement
Teach For Bulgaria works towards providing every child in Bulgaria with equal access to quality education. We believe that every child in Bulgaria should have access to quality education, regardless of where they live, which school they attend, or how much money their parents make. We work towards this cause by developing new teachers, supporting schools, and building partnerships in order to introduce best practices into the education system.
About This Cause
Teach For Bulgaria aims to provide access to quality education to every child in Bulgaria, which is integral to improving socio-economic outcomes and building an equitable society The organization is a partner in the international network Teach For All, which works successfully for improving the access to quality education in more than 60 countries in 5 continents. The quality of education in Bulgaria overall leaves much to be desired. 45 percent of 15-year-olds in school are functionally illiterate. This means they are unable to apply knowledge taught in school to life situations, which require analytical thinking. Moreover, 17 % of young people (20-34 years) are not in education, training, or employment. Educational attainment is a determinant of life outcomes, and its impact spans across labor market integration, financial independence, health, and others. On a societal level, quality education creates stability, fosters innovation, and contributes to economic development and good governance. Teach For Bulgaria's solution is to train and support teachers and schools in Bulgaria to provide quality education for every child. We believe that people are the key to change in the education system - if we have well-trained teachers, principals, and education experts who are constantly evolving and learning effectively, they can pass it on to students and the whole system. We work on 3 programs: A New Way to Teaching We recruit, select, train, and support highly motivated professionals and graduates to become inspiring teachers all over the country. Over the course of two years, they get first-hand experience of the challenges in the education system and contribute to the success of their students. Then they use what they have learned to continue their development as successful teachers, principals, social entrepreneurs, or Teach For Bulgaria ambassadors and supporters. Model Schools We train and support school teams with diverse profiles from around the country in order to improve teaching and management, thus contributing to the success of every student. It is a two-year program which includes a mandatory school leadership module and optional training courses for the school team: 21st century skills, STEM, Bulgarian for multilingual children and social and emotional skills. Learning Together We encourage schools to come up with and implement solutions which address the achievement gap caused by the pandemic. With the financial support of the America for Bulgaria Foundation, we provide grants for the implementation of the best school projects, which have a clear plan, a vision for sustainable development, and the potential to be successfully implemented elsewhere in the country. Over the past 11 years, we trained over 10 000 teachers and school principals. They work with over 50 000 students in all regions of Bulgaria. The generosity of our partners has made our work possible, and we are confident that with increased support we can reach more students. We are always seeking new partnerships with individuals, corporations, and grant-giving organizations, which recognize our mission as a worthy cause and care about the educational attainment of underprivileged children.
