Mission Statement
Manitoba Theatre for Young People is a professional theatre company devoted to young people. Our home, a venue built specifically for young audiences, is a recognized centre for the creation of theatre and participation in the arts. We produce and present professional theatre, provide training in theatre and related arts, and support the development of new and re-imagined works that portray the experiences of children and youth. We are a decisive voice in Canada’s artistic and cultural life. Our vision is to empower all young people to transform the world with imagination and creativity.
About This Cause
As the only professional theatre in Manitoba dedicated solely to young audiences, MTYP truly is one of a kind. Every time a child has a memorable experience at MTYP our community becomes richer in empathy, imagination and creativity. We also know that introduction to arts at an early age encourages a life-long appreciation of arts and culture. The children involved with MTYP today will be the next generation of arts patrons and leaders in our community. MTYP strives to deliver on our mission and vision through the following core programs offered annually: 1. Mainstage: Our plays are enjoyed by an audience of over 30,000 each year. 2. Touring: Every year, MTYP tours two plays to over 100 schools in both urban centres and remote communities, reaching up to 30,000 youth. 3. Theatre School/Drama Resources: Annually, more than 1,500 students take part in Theatre School classes, while another 2,200 participate in Drama Outreach activities. These opportunities provide education in theatre and related disciplines, which foster self-expression and creativity. 4. Native Youth Theatre: Offers free classes for Indigenous students designed to foster imagination, creativity, confidence and self-esteem. 5. Facility Rentals: MTYP is a cultural hub for the entire community, providing opportunities for arts organizations, festivals, community groups, schools and business to rent our space for their programming. It is important to MTYP to provide access to theatre for all young Manitobans, regardless of economic, cultural or physical barriers. The ArtStart program is one way MTYP aims to remove these economic barriers so that young Manitobans can attend plays or participate in education programming without any economical barriers. Schools can receive subsidies for drama workshops or tickets to Mainstage plays and families can receive bursaries for their children who want to attend Theatre School classes or camps.
