Mission Statement
Aptus provides people who have developmental disabilities meaningful opportunities in the community to explore what matters to them.
About This Cause
Since 1979, Aptus has specialized in supporting people who have developmental disabilities (formerly as MukiBaum Treatment Centres). Last year, Aptus impacted over 2400 people in Toronto and York Region of all ages and abilities through the following programs and services: EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM Aptus sees employment as a key strategy to reduce poverty and homelessness for youth and adults who have a developmental disability. 200 people who have developmental disabilities, ages 17 to 50+, receive employment supports in Toronto and York region, including: o job readiness training; o employer-recognized soft skills training; o industry skills training; o job placement; o on-the-job support; o wrap-around supports; and o access to post-secondary education or training PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS Supporting 70 students in partnership with the Toronto District School Board and the York Region District School Board. HIGH-SUPPORT RESIDENCES Supporting 55 high-need youth and adults within Toronto and York region housing. OTHER SUPPORTS o Sensory, art and occupational therapy o Art programming o Culinary programs SUPPORT GROUPS For families and youth who have developmental disabilities, in partnership with CAMH and Aptus’ clinical team. APTUS TEACHING LANDSCAPE An environmental learning hub (Aptus Teaching Landscape) offering programming for 2200 year round, in partnership with Ontario Trillium Foundation and ParkPeople. INDIGENOUS SUPPORTS In partnership with Anishinabek Nation and Aquilla OT Services, Aptus offered workshops and sensory assessments impacting over 200 parents and professionals from 22 First Nations in Ontario. Aptus is now a part of Toronto's Understanding Indigenous Children's Gift's project, in partnership with Native Child and Family Services and other Indigenous and Developmental Service organizations.
