Mission Statement
The purposes of the Society are to relieve poverty in Fort St John and the surrounding area by: (a) providing, leasing and operating non-profit residential accommodation and incidental facilities exclusively for women of primarily low or low and moderate income, including disabled women, and their children who have been emotionally, physically, or sexually abused or traumatized by their abusive partners; (b) operating a resource centre which offers structured programs and services that are directed towards resolving problems faced by women leaving abusive relationships and by persons of low income, in addition to providing them the necessities of life such as food, clothing and other basic amenities.
About This Cause
The Fort St. John Women’s Resource Society strives to provide women and men of low income and their families with the tools to improve the quality of their own lives. We are committed to promoting equality, safety and well-being to the women of our community through education, advocacy and social justice. Clients served by the Women’s Resource Society are disenfranchised, subjugated and/or low-income individuals who face day-to-day challenges in accessing basic necessities or advocating for their own rights. The activities of the Fort St. John Women’s Resource Society include: Poverty Law Advocacy Program – Free legal advocacy including summary advice, representation, information referral and education to low-income individuals. Our Program Advocate provides guidance and support with the following: ● Employment Insurance ● BC Benefits ● PWD, regular Income Assistance, Appeals, Tribunals ● Canadian Pension, Old Age Security, and Disability benefits ● Tenancy Act, Dispute Resolutions, ● Family Law, Family Maintenance and Enforcement ● WCB and Labor Board applications and appeals ● Mental Health referrals Family Law Advocacy Program – The Family Law Advocate provides support, legal information, assistance, and referrals to low income women, men and teens who are facing legal challenges related to family law. Family Law areas covered include: ● Safety plans while in or leaving abusive relationships ● Child access ● Child guardianship/custody ● Responding to an application for child support or spousal support ● Applying for divorce or responding to an application for divorce ● Child protection matters ● Separation agreements Drop-in Center – Confidential drop-in services available to women from 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. These services include: Poverty Outreach Store – Provides free food, bus passes, clothing, basic household items, hygiene products and grocery gift cards to low-income women and children. Information, crisis support & referral services – Offers information about and referrals to other local service providers, as well as immediate emotional supports to women facing crisis or needing to talk. Pamphlets and online information are available to educate women and girls about domestic violence, women’s health, legal processes, and other topics relevant to Women’s Resource Society clients. Second Stage Housing Program (Skye’s Place) – Safe and secure second-stage housing for up to 2 years for women with children fleeing abusive relationships. This program represents collaboration between the Fort St. John Women’s Resource Society and British Columbia Housing Commission on behalf of victims of domestic violence. The Healing Place: A designated community space where agencies or individuals can form self-help groups, healing and talking circles, women trauma groups, Art Therapy, a men’s healing group and any other form of group that the community would like to facilitate communication and healing.
