About This Cause
We believe that “habilitation” or “a good life” means community participation and connections, volunteer opportunities, fulfilling employment, recreational activities, self-advocacy and respect. For over 40 years, KW Habilitation has worked with adults and children with diverse needs. Every year, more than 2,000 children and adults with diverse needs and their families in the Region of Waterloo access the services provided by our 600 dedicated employees working in more than 26 locations. Residential Services We support children and adults in over 23 homes throughout Kitchener Waterloo. In a caring environment that promotes well-being of mind, body and spirit, people have the opportunity to develop individual interests and skills and participate as an active member of a household. Individualized support focuses on self-determination, personal choice, responsibility, contentment, inclusion and community participation. KW Habilitation also offers short breaks for children and adults at our residential homes. We take care that routines that are important to our visitor, such as school, work or other activities, continue throughout the stay. In addition, two weekends a month, a program emphasizing participation in leisure activities and community events is offered for children aged 6-17 years. Community Participation Community Participation offers a wide range of person-centered and person-directed services and supports, all with the goal to provide opportunities that inspire abilities and enrich the lives of adults 18 to 80 plus. We have three activity hub locations: The Vibe, Always Doing Something (ADS) and the Studio (Seniors 55+). Meaningful activities of choice that focus on personal development, wellness, education and learning, as well as supported volunteerism, community inclusion and belonging, making connections and recreation and leisure activities are offered daily. Early Learning, Child Care & Family Resources (ELCCFR) ELCCFR is a member of Waterloo Region’s Child Care Special Needs Resourcing Collaborative. We work with licensed childcare centres to provide support and consultation for children up to six years of age. We serve over 1,000 children a year, many of whom successfully go on to school without any other assistance. Early intervention is the key to our service. Employment Supports Employment Supports provides job readiness education and training for people who are interested in obtaining competitive employment (minimum wage or better) and/or traditional volunteer jobs. Focus is placed on experiential learning opportunities in real work and community settings. Education and training include job search, interview preparation, on-site job coaching and learning public transit. This is a long term support system that assists adults 18+ years of age in determining, obtaining and maintaining employment and/or volunteer positions in the community.
