Mission Statement
The North Shore Women's Centre provides a safe place for women and girls across North and West Vancouver to find community connection and seek support regarding a range of concerns such as separation and divorce, housing, employment, abuse, poverty and physical and mental health. Assistance is offered through a range of programs and services, including a low-barrier drop-in resource centre and lounge.
About This Cause
Operating since 1973, the mission of the North Shore Women's Centre is to improve the social, economic and political status of women, and to encourage and support self-empowerment by acting as a resource and a catalyst for change, from a feminist perspective. We believe that women have the right to: Self determination Equal access to society's resources Safety and security Fairness in the administration of justice Freedom from all forms of discrimination Goals: To provide women with access to resources (information, referral, advocacy); to assist them with life choices To actively address violence against women at all levels of the community To challenge sexism and all other forms of discrimination against women at all levels within the community To work towards the elimination of the feminization of poverty To operate from a feminist framework, as defined by the NSWC, is a person whose actions support and embody the values of growth, personal choice, wholeness, co-operation and equality of women We have between 6,000 - 7,000 service contacts each year where women and girls are supported by one-to-one peer counselling, emergency food and toiletries, laundry services, information, resources and referrals, online resource directory, lending library, and drop-in lounge. A range of free programs and services we offer includes: Basic Computer Training, Family Law Clinic, Fearless: Girls Empowerment Camp, Flip The Script, Single Moms' Support Group, Separation Support Group, Health and Wellness Program, weekly exercise classes, and regular educational workshops.
