My mom made it clear that she wished that I was never born. I turned to drugs and in my 20s, I was addicted to crack…and homeless. Harbour Light opened up their arms and welcomed me, despite my deep dark secrets. It was my seventh time in treatment, and thankfully my last. The Salvation Army Harbour Light saved my life and now I am helping others, and happily celebrating 12 years of sobriety. Thank you Salvation Army, you give me hope” From Jay, Shelter Coordinator – Vancouver Harbour Light, Salvation Army HISTORY IN BRITISH COLUMBIA: The Salvation Army started in 1882 provides compassionate services to men, women and children in all our communities throughout British Columbia. The Salvation Army has grown to become the largest non-governmental direct provider of social services in the country. We give hope and support to vulnerable people today and every day. We offer practical assistance for men, women and children, often tending to the basic necessities of life, providing shelter or homeless people and rehabilitation for people who have lost control of their lives due to an addiction or unavoidable circumstances like a disaster. VOLUNTEERING: We have a constant need for volunteers and have many different opportunities for you to help your local community in the following areas; for example... Foodbank sorting, community meals prep and serve, emergency disasters, painting, repairs, Kettle bell ringers, compassionate care for seniors. DONATIONS: 86% of every dollar donated to The Army is directed towards programs. We are careful with your donation and spent it where you want to make a direct impact or where the need is greatest in British Columbia. THRIFT STORES: Thrift Stores, are 100 percent charity-based and exist to generate funds to support Salvation Army programs and services that help residents in the areas in which they operate. All donated clothing. furniture and household items are efficiently and ethically recycled and sold to offer practical assistance to people in need of support. The Thrift stores have helped to rescue tons of items that still have use and might end up in the landfills.
