Mission Statement
The Salvation Army Vancouver Harbour Light offers practical resources, holistic programs, and compassionate care to people experiencing poverty, homelessness, addiction, and other challenges in their daily lives.
About This Cause
The Salvation Army Vancouver Harbour Light is dedicated to the recognition of the dignity and worth of people, where God's love is demonstrated in a practical way through holistic programs that attend to the spiritual, social, physical and psychological well-being of the individual. We are part of The Salvation Army’s global network of service providers. Across Canada in 2016, The Salvation Army assisted over 1.8 million people through its community and social services. In the early 1950s, Salvation Army officers began to advocate for people living with addiction and homelessness in Vancouver’s downtown eastside and surrounding neighbourhoods. The first Harbour Light offered “soup, soap, and salvation” in a small facility on Powell Street. Over the last six decades, we’ve grown into one of the largest Salvation Army facilities in Canada, serving hundreds of people daily in our facilities on the 100-block of East Cordova Street. Our continuum of care includes community meals, drop-in centre, shelters, detox and addiction treatment, halfway house, affordable housing, and a Learning Centre. Our programs offer a stable environment, effective resources, and compassionate support. Sometimes, our impact is as simple as a full stomach or a pair of dry socks! Our clients tell us that at Harbour Light they find more than they expected: a life beyond survival, a new hope for their future, and a new beginning.
