Mission Statement

Social Planning Toronto is committed to building a “Civic Society”, one in which diversity, equity, social and economic justice, interdependence and active civic participation are central to all aspects of our lives – in our families, neighbourhoods, voluntary and recreational activities, and in our politics.

About This Cause

Social Planning Toronto's goal since first opening its doors in 1957 has always been, and continues to be, to create a city that is fairer and more inclusive for all its residents – not just a select few - through community capacity building, community education and advocacy, policy research and analysis, and social reporting. Our annual City Budget Watch campaign helps to ensure City Council’s decision-making reflects the needs of the communities it represents. Our leadership in convening neighbourhood townhalls and deputation trainings for residents often left behind in the Budget process, and our regular research reports centred around the greatest needs in our city, expose the inequities of Council’s decisions and help mobilize residents to have their voices heard by Toronto’s decision-makers. 2020 saw us release two hard-hitting reports: Senior Poverty and Inequity: The Toronto Experience revealed a startling reality for Toronto seniors, 1 in 6 of whom live in poverty - and immigrant seniors are twice as likely to be affected as non-immigrants. Similarly, our Spaces and Places of Exclusion report highlighted through a series of startling maps, rental housing disparities in immigrant communities, and exposed the ways in which racialized individuals, newcomers, and refugees are disproportionately affected by Toronto’s housing crisis. Throughout the summer, SPT worked with community organizations and resident leaders to survey and interview those most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The input from over 1,400 residents showed significant rises in the need for income supports, affordable housing, and mental health services, particularly among marginalized communities. The resulting data and recommendations were submitted, along with recommendations from over 50 nonprofits, to the Toronto Office of Recovery and Rebuild to ensure an equitable recovery process. With your help, we can continue to hold decision-makers to account and create the better, fairer Toronto that we all deserve. By donating to Social Planning Toronto, you are helping us to: - Extend the reach of our community engagement to strengthen the voice of more of the city’s marginalized populations - Collaborate with more community partners to build larger networks of support - Support more grassroots organizations in affecting change in their local communities - Publish and disseminate more research and make policy recommendations based on this evidence - Widen the audience of and strengthen the impact of that research - Conduct more interviews and surveys with residents of Toronto’s many marginalized neighbourhoods to affect more progressive local policies - Extend contracts and hire more staff to meet growing demands on our resources - Host more community townhalls and deputation trainings for residents in Toronto’s most vulnerable communities
