THE GEORGE R. GARDINER MUSEUM OF CERAMIC ART

Mission Statement

Clay Builds Community The Gardiner Museum brings together people of all ages and backgrounds through the shared values of creativity, wonder, and community that clay and ceramic traditions inspire. We engage audiences with exhibitions, programs, and hands-on classes, while stewarding a significant permanent collection. We interpret historical ceramics to emphasize their relevance today, and champion emerging and established Canadian artists and their role in the broader world. We innovate through clay education, as we bring together the experience of making with a deeper understanding of the art of ceramics. We believe in making, looking, and thinking through clay.

About This Cause

The Gardiner Museum was created by George and Helen Gardiner when they decided to share their important, historic ceramic collection with the public. To house this collection, architect Keith Wagland was commissioned to design a building sited on the campus of Victoria College, University of Toronto, and the Museum opened in 1984. Between 1987 and 1996, the Museum was managed by the Royal Ontario Museum. With an endowment from George Gardiner before his death in 1997, it again became an independent non-profit institution.
