Mission Statement

Universal Rehabilitation Service Agency (URSA) is a non-profit charitable organization. We provide services to the most vulnerable Albertans. Most of the individuals in service at URSA are dependent on staff for almost everything in their life. URSA provides life changing supports to children, adults, and seniors living with a multitude of barriers and varying abilities.

About This Cause

A common belief in the eighties was that individuals with disabilities could not survive in a community setting and should be placed in large institutions. URSA challenged this belief and opened its first five group homes for 30 adults and children with disabilities. Not only did these individuals survive in the community, they thrived! URSA, a Calgary-based non-profit charitable organization, has provided services to seniors, adults and children with developmental disabilities or brain injuries since 1985. URSA has a variety of programs ranging from ten hours a week in-home support, to 24-hour staffed residences, and a variety of day programs. With the variety of programming options, URSA has 25 different locations all across the city of Calgary, Airdrie and surrounding area where we provide services to close to 300 individuals. This includes homes and programming for children, and a home for Indigenous people with a variety of support needs. The majority of individuals in service with URSA have very significant and multiple disabilities including; requiring support for all aspects of personal care including; bathing/hygiene, feeding/specialized diets, and 24-hour staff support for all areas of life. 24 hour support URSA provides 24-hour service to children, youth, adults and seniors living with developmental disabilities. This includes 25 programs throughout the city of Calgary, Airdrie and surrounding areas. URSA works closely with outside agencies to ensure consistency between different environments. Programs focus on assisting individuals with meeting their personal goals, in both residential and community settings. Brain Injury Services Brain Injury Survivors are supported in a community based setting which promotes survivors to live an independently as possible. URSA also operates a day program for individuals living with a brain injury, that focuses on community participation to maintain their physical stamina as well as prevents social isolation. EasyStreet is a life-sized replica of a city street, complete with shops, vehicles and a bank. In this safe and secure environment, individuals are offered an opportunity to practice everyday skills. These skills are needed to navigate through basic community settings. EasyStreet is a safe place for brain injury to practice skills they may have lost after their injury and a non intrusive environment for assessment. Kootenay Lodge Kootenay Lodge is a vital supported housing program serving the most vulnerable and at-risk indigenous people. Kootenay Lodge provides supported and specialized housing for indigenous adults who live with complex needs.   Children’s Services URSA’s Children Services includes homes and respite services. Children staying with us enjoy consistency in their school programs and participation in recreation and leisure programs.
