About This Cause

Victoria University has a noble history of understanding how education contributes to human flourishing and the University will continue to thrive, largely because of this distinctive vision, its generous alumni support and its place within one of the world’s great research universities. Reasons to give: 1. Admission & In-Course Awards help us attract and retain Canada's top students. It also provides accessible higher education to those with limited financial resources. 2. Dean's Fund for Student Life supports experiences such as academic conferences, student publications, competitions, performing arts, and other outside-the-classroom learning opportunities. 3. Research and Travel Awards send Vic students around the globe for research and studies that provide a global context for a student's academic experience. 4. Support of the Innovative Vic One program: The award-winning Vic One program is a distinctive academic experience for first-year students. It’s designed to highlight the meaningful dialogue that can take place in a supportive small classroom setting. Critically astute and engaged, Vic One students apply to one of 8 academic streams that form the foundation of their first-year experience. Each Vic One stream offers a unique perspective through the exploration of the inter-connectivity between disciplines with a focus on a central theme. Vic One opens up multiple career options by exposing students to interdisciplinary learning. Small classes are supplemented by opportunities to interact directly with top minds in a variety of fields and professions through our weekly guest lecture series. 5. Providing accessibility to a university experience through the Ideas for the World program. Victoria University is committed to the belief that our students should have a robust and diverse undergraduate experience. Research has repeatedly shown us that what students want is the same thing: they want to do well in school and have a life-changing experience. Ideas for the World does just that. As an umbrella program with different sections, Ideas for the World blends social interaction, academic reflection, and community awareness (locally and globally). The program is transformative and engaging for all who participate. Each offering of the program consists of 8-10 weekly, seminar-style discussions. Discussions are led by selected UofT faculty and guest speakers. 6. In support of the Jackman Scholars-in-Residence (SiR) program: SiR is an intensive 4-week residency in inter-diciplinary humanities and humanistic social-science research for upper-year undergraduates. It provides students with an opportunity to acquire advanced research skills and experience while collaborating with an interdisciplinary and intellectually vibrant community of peers, professors, and research professionals. Students selected for SiR will live in residence and work in small teams on one of 10 research projects, each led by a professor. Students share meals and group activities including multidisciplinary workshops on research methodologies, standards, protocol, and professional communication; excursions to archives, museums, and cultural events; and talks featuring professionals such as lawyers, policy-makers, and documentary filmmakers that highlight research-intensive career trajectories.
