Mission Statement

Welcome Hall Mission is a community-based organization serving homeless, marginalized and under-served men, women and children since 1892. The mission operates an emergency shelter for homeless men and its programs also support addiction treatment and reinsertion, transitional housing, life coaching, social and personal development for children, training for re-entry to the job market and specialized care for at-risk mothers. Through its food bank, it provides twice-weekly distributions of groceries and ancillary services to individuals and families in need.

About This Cause

On both a short- and long-term basis, the mission helps homeless people, disadvantaged families, new immigrants, youth living on the street, homeless or marginalized teens, and children. The outreach programs Welcome Hall Mission operates are quite diverse: the men’s emergency shelter, addiction treatment and reinsertion, transitional housing and life coaching services. The addiction treatment and reinsertion program is a transitional housing and social integration program that helps encourage and support homeless men as they take control of their lives and find real solutions that will facilitate their reintegration into society. We offer our clientele rooms equipped with private bathrooms and kitchenettes, weekly psychosocial counselling sessions with specialized counsellors, as well as meals and laundry service. Our programs are tailored to meet the needs of each person. The transitional housing program is a three-year reinsertion program with low-income housing at the very heart of the reinsertion process towards gaining autonomy. There are 26 housing units within two buildings. They include 24 studio units and two 4½ units. Five of these units are wheelchair accessible. The program offers stability to the occupants, allowing them to focus on being fully involved in their reinsertion process. The program is intended for adults (single adults, couples and also receives families) who come from low-income households and are currently going through residential instability. Adults who qualify must be in the process of becoming fully autonomous or ready to commence this process within the first six months of admission to the program. The men’s emergency shelter consists of 187 emergency beds and 25 transitional beds. It can increase its capacity to 222 beds during the winter season to accommodate those in need. We offer the homeless population shelter, hot meals, clean clothes, new underwear, hygiene products, showers and counselling. The goal is to get them off the streets and transition them into adequate housing, thus restoring a lost measure of stability to their lives. Welcome Hall Mission’s medical programs encompass nursing services and dental care. The mission provides frontline nursing care to homeless men, men in addiction treatment programs, homeless youth, and young mothers in social and economic difficulty; the dental clinic provides free dental care to the mission’s disadvantaged, underserved and low-income populations. Family Services: Emergency food aid, information and referrals, workshops, translation services for refugees and new immigrants, holiday baskets and Christmas toy distribution. The Food Bank caters to 10,000 clients each month. Children’s Services: Weekly after-school programs, summer/winter camps, toy days, back-to-school supplies, activities designed for disadvantaged kids to help build self-esteem, motivation and prevent despondency and juvenile delinquency. Youth Services: Resource center for homeless street youth: meals offered twice a day, showers, workshops, emergency food, holiday baskets, clothing, advocacy, vaccination as well as various health services. Education and Employability: Created in 2007 in conjunction with Emploi-Québec, the provincial Government employment agency, these socio-professional insertion programs give those who have been out of work for a long period a chance to reintegrate into the workforce. Jim Lund Dental Clinic at Welcome Hall Mission: Offering free dental health care services to homeless and economically disadvantaged individuals. Over 2575 patients have been treated since the opening of the Jim Lund Dental Clinic. This represents a collaborative initiative in partnership with the Faculty of Dentistry of McGill University.
