Mission Statement

We are a Christian organization serving and advocating for refugee families by providing safe, temporary housing, initial settlement services, and follow-up support. We influence and engage the broader public through education and advocacy networks.

About This Cause

Established in 1989, Christie Refugee Welcome Centre is one of Toronto's largest permanent shelters dedicated to refugee claimant families. We are located at Bloor and Christie in downtown Toronto serving and advocating for refugee families by providing safe, temporary housing, initial settlement services and follow-up support. We own and operate three buildings with 24 private rooms and 76 beds and deliver six main services: • Shelter: private sleeping rooms for families, meals, clothing and personal care products • Settlement: ensure refugee documents are completed, arrange legal support and representation for refugee hearings, offer orientations to life in Canada, find permanent housing, and provide after-school children's literacy, fitness and music programs • Post-Shelter: support and advocate for families during their first years in Canada after they move out of the shelter into local communities • Employment: provide a full spectrum of support to help find meaningful employment • Centre for Refugee Children: focused on supporting unaccompanied and separated children and other vulnerable refugee and migrant children in Ontario • Onsite health clinic: staffed by doctors and nurse/practitioners to provide vital medical examinations and vaccinations In 2022, 156 refugees stayed in our shelter for an average of 7 months. Sixty-four percent of our refugees last year were female, and about half of our residents were children. They came from 24 different source countries, with Bahamas, Nigeria, Mexico, Angola, and Iran the top five. We helped 56 families find housing and continue to support them as they settle into their new communities. Over 400 clients were provided case management services through our post-shelter program, and 30 clients found meaningful work in their field of choice in our employment program. The Centre for Refugee Children served over 100 unaccompanied or separated children with settlement support.
