About This Cause

YWCA Edmonton provides programs and services to more than 9,000 people each year; support they depend on every day. Advocacy | We advocate to create equity in our community, inclusive of all. We work to create lasting change, influencing public policy, empowering people to stand up for social justice and foster healthy, equitable communities. Our advocacy aims to end gender-based violence, achieve economic equality, reduce barriers to social supports and foster leadership in women and girls. Camp Yowochas | Highly regarded as one of Alberta’s finest outdoor education centres, we offer summer camp and year-round outdoor education to thousands of children and adults each year. Our team building, leadership development, and environmental education programs are designed to develop self-esteem, build friendships, foster respect for the natural world and encourage character development. Our goal is to instill in all our visitors respect for self, others, and the environment. Counselling | We offer affordable mental health supports to anyone who needs it. We never turn a client away due to financial hardship, ensuring that the most vulnerable people have access to the best possible treatment. Our clients are typically women with low income, who have experienced trauma, and are often in crisis. Our Registered Psychologists have expertise in complex trauma and intimate partner violence. We are also recognized as a high-quality teaching facility by post-secondary institutions, and offer practicum placements for students across Canada and the US. Disability Services | We serve more than 200 adults and children with disabilities and/or medical fragility, from across Alberta as well as families from the NWT and Nunavut. We provide respite care and medical assistance, and also use goal setting and personal achievement to provide opportunities for each individual to achieve their full potential. Our holistic approach ensures that the client's family, network, and community also have the tools and knowledge they need to support each individual. Youth Programs | Our programs are delivered by volunteer mentors for girls, boys and gender diverse youth. We create a safe and welcoming environment for participants to share with their peers. We educate on a variety of topics including: positive mental health, healthy relationships, bullying, and community resources. Healing Haven Retreats | Indigenous-led healing retreats for family members of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit people. In 2021, these land and art-based gatherings honoured the memories of 43 missing and murdered Indigenous, women and Two-Spirit people. Three more of these retreats are planned for 2022.
