Mission Statement
The Mobile Food Market (MFM) brings healthy, high quality and affordable food to Halifax neighbourhoods with food access issues. The MFM is a program of H.R.D.A. Enterprises Ltd (commonly known as MetroWorks).
About This Cause
In 2016, the Mobile Food Market (MFM) launched as a pilot project using a retrofitted Halifax Transit bus to deliver fresh produce to 5 communities in the Halifax Region. Following the success of the pilot, the MFM has evolved into a year-round initiative, expanding its core services to 13 sites and using four unique delivery models: 1) FRESH FOOD MARKETS– Community-based affordable food markets run at central indoor and outdoor locations; 2) PRODUCE PACKS- $10 bags of produce that can be pre-ordered and picked up at a central location within the community (ie. recreation centre, churches, etc); 3) BULK FOOD DISTRIBUTION– Fresh food purchased in bulk by organizations that have a similar mandate and are working to incorporate healthy food into existing meal or snack programs (ie. daycares, school, etc); 4) EMERGENCY FOOD HAMPERS - During COVID-19, the MFM has had to pivot our services to response to shifting community needs. During this time, we've launched a free food hamper program that does home delivery of fresh fruit and vegetables, dried goods, bread and cotton face masks.
