Mission Statement

The vision of the AWFC is that all animals be well cared for and treated with respect, and that an enlightened ethic of animal care be fostered.

About This Cause

The Animal Welfare Foundation of Canada aims to achieve measurable positive change in improving the lives of animals in Canada through funding innovative educational, research and public outreach initiatives. Since 1965, the AWFC has successfully managed donated funds to continually support its vision that all animals be well cared for and treated with respect. To achieve this, the AWFC encourages people to place a priority on the physical, psychological, and behavioural needs of all animals used in research, education, and in agriculture, as well as companion animals and wildlife. In other words, the AWFC seeks to change the way that Canadians think about using and caring for animals. The AWFC will: 1. Promote initiatives that improve the welfare of animals in Canada. 2. Promote initiatives that have a national impact on the welfare of animals in Canada. 3. Strategically allocate the AWFC’s resources to fund projects that can be copied and used by other organizations to improve welfare in their regions. 4. Preferentially support activities that are difficult to fund, or that are not typically funded by other granting agencies. 5. Preferentially support activities that enhance the visibility and long term viability of the AWFC. The AWFC continues its legacy of supporting animal welfare advancements through our grant-making activities. All funds donated to the AWFC have been managed in a sustainable manner. Capital is maintained and only income generated by investments is allocated to projects each year. This ensures that there are capital funds in perpetuity to advance animal welfare. Funds are awarded primarily to animal protection charities, to student animal welfare clubs at universities across Canada, and in support of public lectures on animal welfare. The activities of the AWFC cover a wide range of issues and species of animals (see our program grants at awfc.ca). AWFC grants and programs are administered by an all-volunteer Board of Directors, composed of veterinarians, animal welfare scientists and other professionals who have broad experience of animal welfare issues in Canada and in the evaluation of grant requests and project outcomes. The Foundation does not receive funding from any level of government, but relies on donations and bequests to carry out its animal welfare programs. Each year the AWFC receives many more grant applications than it is able to fund due to our limited funds. We encourage and appreciate your financial support, which will allow us to provide additional grants to deserving proposals, and continue to work effectively on behalf of animal welfare throughout Canada. If you share in our values and our commitment, please join us, support us and help us continue to have an impact on improving the lives of animals in Canada.
