Mission Statement

Create an immersive and inclusive environment where young people find community, build empathy, develop critical thinking skills, and explore nuanced perspectives on the world’s most challenging problems.

About This Cause

SUNIA is a summer camp that takes place every August in Alberta's Rocky Mountains. We teach high school students about politics, community engagement, sustainable development, the United Nations, and more. In short, we educate youth about issues facing our world and how they can make a difference. Every year we bring 100–150 youth to Alberta's Rockies to participate in our program, which blends education and recreation. Our innovative curriculum consists mainly of hands-on activities where students can engage with the material rather than do worksheets or attend lectures. Issues that we cover include global security, sustainable development, colonialism, Indigenous issues, migration, and more. Our alumni go on to make an impact in all kinds of fields, at home and abroad, from Mayor Don Iveson to actor Nathan Fillion to Supreme Court Justice Mahmud Jamal. Founded in 1952, SUNIA is proud to be a longtime educational partner of the UN, who support our program annually. For decades, the UN has sent diplomats, experts, and even a retired Secretary-General to come and spend a week with our campers and share their incredible experiences.
