Mission Statement
Our mission: We are a family-focused community leader that provides support, resources, and opportunities to children and families living with physical disabilities, including cerebral palsy, throughout their life journey.
About This Cause
CP Kids & Families was founded in 1951 by a group of parents who were dealing with the challenges of similar, yet somewhat varied disabilities of their children and had not received a specific diagnosis. Through advances in science and medicine, doctors were able to recognize the defining characteristics of Cerebral Palsy, which brought about the need to create a support program for individuals and families affected by a Cerebral Palsy diagnosis. For over 71 years, CP Kids & Families has been a leader in the disability community, providing support, resources, and opportunities to families and children living with physical disabilities. We are more than an organization – we are a community, an extended family, and a lifeline to families in need. We share in the experience of having children living with a physical disability; and we continually work to achieve the vision that all children and families living with disabilities experience an inclusive, abundant, and happy life. CP Kids & Families truly embodies our namesake, providing support to all infants, children, teenagers, adults, and their families who are living with a physical disability diagnosis, including cerebral palsy, in Calgary and the surrounding area. We recognize that no one desires to be different or defined by a label, thus our programs and services focus on individuality and the unique life experiences of every child. CP Kids & Families’ work is expansive, offering help to all those in need within our community. Our flagship Adapted Bike Program has been in operation for 22 years, and we now have over 500 children riding adapted bicycles who get to experience the simple joy of riding a bike. Our Music and Movement program gathers parents and children together weekly, where they partake in various activities conducted by both a physiotherapist and a musical therapist. Yearly, we offer a Light Up A Child’s Life summer camp for children of all ages living with a physical disability, where one-on-one support creates a safe environment for inclusive, fun, and accessible daily activities. Furthermore, we offer family support services and counselling with a Registered Social Worker through our organization to help families during times of crisis, navigating grief, building resiliency and more. Our membership base has grown significantly to over 800 members, as we adapted our mission to include all physical disabilities, not just cerebral palsy, highlighting the inclusivity of our services. Our vision is that all children and families living with disabilities experience an inclusive, abundant, and happy life; and we strive to exemplify this vision throughout all that we do.
