Mission Statement

Calgary Humane Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was incorporated in 1922 with a mandate of providing effective means for the prevention of cruelty to children, dependent persons, and animals within the City of Calgary. A few short years later, the organization’s mandate shifted to caring solely for animals. Over a century later, Calgary Humane Society continues to help abuse, neglected, and abandoned animals find a second chance at a life they deserved right from the start. Our mission is clear and simple: "Protect animals. Support people. Create a more humane world”. We have a vision of being a part of a community with the courage to advocate for animal welfare with a dream of living in a world where all animals are treated with respect and compassion and all are able to live an enriched life. Into the second century of connecting lives, Calgary Humane Society today, is so much more than just a shelter. As leaders in animal welfare, it is understood that in order to help as many animals as we can, we must also be able to support the people who love them. Through innovative strategies and collaboration with community partners, we have been able to develop programming and resources to assist families who require support with their animal. From families fleeing domestic violence to supporting our senior citizens we work with our partners to ensure the human-animal bond remains unbroken. For those animals who need the support of the shelter team, each one is met with a supportive, compassionate and caring group of staff, volunteers and foster families who ensure their physical and mental well-being is maintained. Each animal’s pathway is customized to meet their unique needs and we are able to utilize the improvements in the newly expanded facility and state of the art veterinary clinic to move an animal quickly through the shelter and on to the next stage of their life. At Calgary Humane Society, we are committed to working with our community partners and supporters, as a collective group to tackle the challenges surrounding animal welfare today. All unique contributions and perspectives are appreciated as we rely solely on the support of the community to carry out this critically important work. It is only through collaboration, education, and the ongoing support of all those with our shared passion of improving animal welfare in our community, that we will be able to achieve our goals of ending animal cruelty and creating a more humane world.

About This Cause

The first Shelter was built in 1960 with a capacity to handle 2,500 animals a year. By 1973, the Society was receiving over 8,000 animals a year and it became urgently necessary to construct a new facility. The CHS opened a new animal care centre in 1976 approximately five times the size of the previous Shelter. In 1988 another campaign, Room to Live, raised enough funds to expand and renovate the shelter. Through the late 1990's, the CHS helped between 12,000 and 13,000 animals, a figure which represents both stray and owners’ animals. More room was needed to house cats and to accommodate a growing staff of workers and volunteers. In 2005, the Calgary Humane Society experienced more growth with the “By Leaps and Bounds Capital Campaign” reaching its target of $10 million ensuring that our wonderful, large and safe facility could be constructed, paid for and opened in 2006. There can be dozens of different reasons for why a helpless animal is exposed to abuse or is abandoned. As Calgary’s first animal welfare organization, we proudly combine our legacy of sheltering with our focus on education. We are Calgary’s only open-admission animal shelter, and this means one simple thing: We never say no. We never turn an animal away. When they need us, we respond.
