Mission Statement
To empower Canadians with Down syndrome and their families. We raise awareness and provide information on Down syndrome through prenatal, early childhood, school years, adulthood, and retirement stages of life.
About This Cause
CDSS is the only national source of expertise promoting the abilities and contributions of people with Down syndrome. We provide evidence-based resources and connections to people with Down syndrome and those who support them, while positively shaping the social and policy contexts in which they live. We are guided by self advocates and work along side those with lived experience to develop and implement programs needed for individuals, families and supports. CDSS provides a Resource Hub which focuses on all life stages of an individual with Down syndrome, their families and supports. From our new born Welcome 21 kit to advance care planning we strive to provide up to date, evidence based resources for our community. Through our free programming we also help children learn critical literacy skills, create employment inclusion training for corporations and educational webinars for teachers, caregivers and supports. We are also at the forefront of research through some new initiatives: working with Google to ensure the voice of those with Down syndrome is recognized through Voice Recognition technology and collaborating on research that is investigating the impact of physical activity on cognitive abilities of people with Down syndrome. Our small team also works to improve the lives and bring awareness to the abilities of our community through World Down Syndrome Day and Canadian Down Syndrome Week. Other projects: -National Resource Hub :Early Years, Mental Health, Employment, Education, Aging, Finances -Advocacy efforts with Federal, Provincial and Territorial Governments on issues affecting the lives of Canadians with Down syndrome -Canada's only national magazine for and about Down syndrome: 3.21 Magazine
