Mission Statement

The Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research (CANFAR) is Canada’s only independent charitable foundation dedicated to eliminating HIV and AIDS through innovative research and national awareness. By funding promising Canadian HIV and AIDS research, and promoting prevention through educational campaigns focusing on youth from across Canada, CANFAR is working to end AIDS globally.

About This Cause

Over the past three and a half decades, CANFAR has invested more than $24 million in close to 550 grants to HIV/AIDS research projects that have led to tremendous breakthroughs in HIV prevention, testing, access to treatment, stigma, and the search for a cure. In addition, CANFAR annually reaches thousands of Canadian youth and educators through its national youth HIV awareness programs. At this crucial juncture, the most effective way for us to use the tools we have helped to create is to address and close the gaps in HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and care between key communities and the rest of the population. Each year it is the responsibility of CANFAR’s Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) to evaluate which research proposals seem most promising and likely to make a worthwhile contribution to the international body of HIV and AIDS research. CANFAR is dedicated to funding all aspects of research, including fundamental and applied research; education and prevention; care; psychosocial initiatives; and, community research. A cure is within reach, but we’re not there – not yet. And we can’t stop now. With your continued support, we will create an AIDS-free future. It Ends With Us!
