Mission Statement

The Carnegie Community Centre Association (CCCA) supports services and programs for the people in the Downtown Eastside (DTES) in an inclusive and welcoming environment at the Carnegie Community Centre. The DTES is a community with needs that are unique to its low income population. The Centre signs up approximately 5000 community members per year at a cost of $1.00 per member. Many others access the Centre without membership. All community members are welcome. We call them our patrons.

About This Cause

Patrons come to Carnegie Centre for a wide variety of reasons. They come looking for help in finding a job or accessing their benefits, some come looking for a nutritious meal, to disengage from alcohol or drug abuse, to find their lost family, to restore their self-esteem by volunteering, to participate in an exercise class, to get a haircut, to use the free phone, to watch a free movie, to participate in the democratic process regarding community led decisions. In all cases they become active members of a genuine caring community. The Association board (elected through an open nomination process) holds monthly committee and general board meetings that are open to all community services. Decisions are made by committees of the board and ratified by all board members. It is fundraising, donations and gaming funding that allows these community members to have some input and control of what is offered to them and to their neighbours.
