About This Cause
The Centre franco-ontarien de folklore is a leader in heritage development and conservation. Its mission is to collect, preserve and distribute Franco-Ontarian oral heritage. The extensive work of its founder, Father Germain Lemieux, and the Inventaire du patrimoine franco-ontarien (inventory of Franco-Ontarian heritage) has provided the Centre with an impressive reputation. Recognized as a Provincial Heritage Organization in 1991, the Centre was honored, in 1996, with the Parks Canada Award for its contribution to the preservation and development of Franco-Ontarian heritage and, in 2002, with the Roger-Bernard Award for outstanding contributions to the preservation and enhancement of one or more elements of Franco-Ontarian heritage. Tales of our Traditions Following a tour of Northern Ontario, CFOF produced the short film Mémoires de la Route 11. In this 50-minute documentary, various people tell their stories and share some Franco-Ontarian tradi-tions. You can get segments of the content in the video section of our website www.cfof.on.ca Traditions Come to Life The Centre franco-ontarien de folklore invites the community regularly for traditional celebrations such as Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Sainte-Catherine and Fête des Rois (Epiphany). Traditions are kept alive with tales and songs. Since 2017, the Center organise a French Storytelling Festival, the Festival Les vieux m'ont conté. Visit our website for our calendar of events. www.cfof.on.ca Resource Centre The Resource Centre represents an invaluable collection of more than 5,000 documents on folklore and heritage. It also contains the largest collection of monographs and histories of Franco-Ontarian parishes. The Resource centre is electronically linked to the Laurentian University’s Library. Computerized Database From 1991 to 1993, the Centre franco-ontarien de folklore undertook a project called the Inventaire du patrimoine franco-ontarien (inventory of Fran-co-Ontarian heritage) and created a database of more than 10 000 entries, over 23 500 photographs and ethno-historical files on all Franco-Ontarian communities. The database offers information on Franco-Ontarians’ con-tributions to the development of the economy, of industry and of the cul-tural and religious life of Ontarian communities. Folklore Archives Our archives contain thousands of audio recordings of tales, legends and songs, primarily from Father Germain Lemieux’s vast collection, as well as a significant collection of manuscripts. Germain Lemieux, Founder Native of the Gaspé Peninsula, Father Germain Lemieux undertook the collection of folklore in Northern Ontario between 1948 and 1972. He founded the Centre de recheche folklorique which became, in 1960, the Institut de folklore, which then developed into the Centre franco-ontarien de folklore in 1972. Over the years, Father Lemieux has been the recipient of many awards in recognition of the quality of his work.
