Mission Statement

Arts Umbrella is a not-for-profit arts education organization, providing top-quality classes in the visual and performing arts for children and youth, aged 2-22. Our classes reach 24,000 young people throughout Metro Vancouver and Surrey each year, 19,000 of who take part entirely free-of-charge. We have four facilities, including our primary facility on Granville Island, and offer programs in nearly 40 community centres and neighbourhood houses, and 60 public schools throughout Metro Vancouver and Surrey.

About This Cause

Our Vision: A better world, where all young lives are inspired to pursue a lifelong journey towards self-expression, compassion, and humanity. Our Mission: To be Canada’s leader in arts education for young people, building community and delivering profound experiences through our commitment to innovation, excellence, and inclusivity. At the heart of what we do, we inspire people to live creative, authentic, and courageous lives. ln 1979, Arts Umbrella opened its doors to 45 children. It was an endeavour buoyed by the dream of five enthusiastic artists and parents concerned about the lack of arts education available to children. The need for children’s arts education in the community was clearly evident, and Arts Umbrella took off instantly. From those early days, Arts Umbrella has flourished with a strong vision and an unwavering focus to inspire creativity... for good. Over nearly 40 years, we have helped more than 500,000 young people explore their artistic potential and build community in our cities, province, and country. Demand for Arts Umbrella’s programs continues to increase, and, as funding permits, programming grows and evolves to meet this need. At Arts Umbrella, young people learn to dance, to paint, to sculpt, to create computer games and cartoons, and to perform. They experience the joy of creation and discover their own creative potential. They learn to appreciate the arts. Most importantly, through arts education, children gain self-confidence, independent thinking, technical skills, discipline, and even improved academic results and specific career direction. Numerous studies indicate that people who receive arts education early in life reap many tangible, long-term, life-changing benefits, and gain skills that can help them well into adulthood. No other organization in Canada offers the breadth and depth of visual and performing arts training opportunities for young people, across a wide range of ages and disciplines, instructed by highly-qualified arts-educators, with all programs subsidized by community fundraising initiatives. Everyone that has been touched by Arts Umbrella – from students past and present, to parents, artist-instructors, volunteers, and donors – thrives, and is fed by the energy of the thousands of young people who engage in the Arts Umbrella experience, year after year. Our advanced programs attract students from across Canada and around the world, and our graduates present internationally. Arts Umbrella’s students are leading the way in industries like film, publishing, and digital technology; but more importantly, our students have gone on to become creative and compassionate citizens in whatever path they choose. This year we will serve more than 24,000 young people throughout Metro Vancouver and Surrey, reaching 80% through bursaries, scholarships, and free community programs. These programs are delivered in close to 40 neighbourhood houses/community centres and more than 60 schools, all serving vulnerable families. Today, Arts Umbrella employs a staff of more than 250 professional artists, educators and administrators, who all share the belief that inspiring young people through arts education is essential.
