Habitat for Humanity Canada mobilizes volunteers, corporations and local community partners to build housing and provide affordable homeownership as a means to break from the cycle of poverty.
About This Cause
Habitat for Humanity Canada provides a hand up - not a hand out - by building and selling affordable homes to hardworking low-income families in need of safe and decent shelter. The families supported through Habitat for Humanity Canada are caught in a cycle of poverty because they're working hard to make ends meet and making too much income at several low-paying jobs to take advantage of programs such as subsidized housing, yet too little income to properly provide for their families. Many are forced to make impossible choices between essentials such as shelter and food, or between paying their rent and paying the utility bills. Many pay up to 70% of their monthly income on their rent alone. Habitat "partner families" put in 500 hours of "sweat equity" to build their own homes and do other community work. We then sell them their homes at a 0% interest mortgage capped at 30% of their total monthly income, allowing them to free up funds to pay bills, buy food, send their children to tutors and extra-curricular activities like piano lessons and hockey, and parents can go back to school to get better jobs, and so on. Studies prove Habitat's model works. Families are healthier and happier; their children do better in school; they are able to have savings; they have a place they are proud to call home; they thrive versus just survive,
