Mission Statement

The Huntington Society of Canada is part of an exemplary international coalition of scientist and families working together to find treatments to slow or stop HD. Your gifts fuel the HD research campaign, which is making great strides forward and providing great hope for the future.

About This Cause

What Will I Be When I Grow Up? Every child born to a parent with Huntington disease has a 50% chance of sharing the same fate. It's passed from parent to child, a debilitating brain disorder that's inevitably fatal and completely incurable- until now. Last year, for the first time in 135 years of study, Huntington's was successfully cured in a mouse. We've never been closer to eliminating this disease. All we need is your support to take the final steps. More than ever, every dollar makes a difference. A meaningful treatment for HD could be as close as one step away. Research is ongoing, and, more than ever before, maintaining momentum in the fight is critically important. Your awareness and compassion means a lot. But your donation means more. And, because a meaningful treatment is so close, the next dollar donated truly could be the difference. Your Society attracts and keeps scientists in the field of HD research by funding pre and post doctoral fellows and awarding prizes for excellence in HD research. You can also fund basic HD science by supporting our NAVIGATOR research program, which has advanced our knowledge of HD in several important areas. We also help donors to find HD research projects of special interests, and we provide opportunities to support special clinical trials for immediate symptomatic relief of HD while essential research continues on the basic science to ultimately prevent or slow the disease. Simply by supporting HD research, donors can also contribute to other neurological disorders like Alzheimer, Parkinson or ALS. While these diseases involve different populations and brain cells, there are great similarities among the disease processes – they involve protein aggregation, cleavage and misfolding and damaged nerve cells. HD research explores neurodegenerative processes in a way other disorders cannot since we know with certainty who will get HD and roughly when; therefore, we can detect and understand the disease before symptoms appear. The Huntington Society of Canada not only enables donors to make a profound difference in people’s lives for generations to come – we offer opportunities to get involved through our local Chapter volunteers groups and our local special events. Goals The universal goal for the international HD movement is to find therapies that slow or prevent the progression of HD. The Huntington Society of Canada and Canadian researchers are a key part of this effort and the Society has a unique role to play. The international campaign for HD research is reaching a stage in its evoluton which calls for a focused approach to funding research. In parallel with the international campaign, the Huntington Society of Canada will to direct its dollars to the most promising, high priority areas in basic and clinical research on early targets and complementary lines of attack. In addition, the Society strives to plan its research funding on a multi-year basis; and to partner with world-class organizations to leverage their resources and expertise to help to influence the direction of HD research in Canada and internationally.
