Mission Statement

As the first centre for abused women and children in Canada, we are leaders in the campaign for women’s empowerment, providing innovative, specialized services that help abused women and their children transform their lives and break the cycle of violence. Interval House provides a continuum of services and a holistic approach to help women and children escape violence and rebuild their lives. We nurture families from crisis intervention to re-integration into the workforce and the community with programs providing emotional support, practical help and life skills.

About This Cause

Every six days, a Canadian woman is killed by her intimate partner. In the last five years, at least one woman or girl was killed every 48 hours in Canada. It happens in all cultures and religions; in every ethnic and racial community; and to the rich and the economically disadvantaged. It’s happening in their homes, where they are supposed to feel safe. Most women who turn to Interval House are financially dependent on their partners and/or social services. They do not have access to safe and affordable housing and risk homelessness. Recognizing these challenges, Interval House, with nearly 50 years of experience, provides a continuum of services to help women and children escape abuse for a better, violence-free life. We nurture families starting with crisis intervention, such as providing emergency shelter services and then addressing and supporting their re-integration into the community and the workforce. Our programs offer women and their children practical and emotional support to start rebuilding their lives, and to leave the violence behind for good. Interval House has 12 bedrooms — family suites and single rooms. We can house 30 women and children at any time, and offer them support on their healing journeys. We provide all the basic necessities for the duration of their stay such as food, toiletries, emergency medicine, and baby supplies. We also have an accessible suite, to accommodate residents with special needs. It’s truly a warm and comfortable home. To break the cycle of violence, women need financial security, safe and affordable housing, and to believe in a brighter future. In our community, women escaping violence are empowered to leave violence behind forever. Available to Interval House residents as well as other survivors of intimate partner violence living in the Greater Toronto Area, our BESS program (Building Economic Self-Sufficiency) connects women with the tools to rebuild and transform their lives after abuse. By providing access to education, professional skills training, life skills workshops, financial and housing assistance, job opportunities, professional wardrobe options, and counselling, BESS helps set women at all stages of the healing journey on the path to living independently, safely, and comfortably. The BESS counsellors and facilitators help each client tailor the program to their own needs for the best results and women take the modules that are relevant to them at their own pace.
