Mission Statement

We strive for effective, just and humane responses to crime and its causes.

About This Cause

The “justice system” is more than a system. More than a set of laws. More than a perception. Justice is a living story of accountability, of redemption, of correction, growth and change. Above all else, justice is managed by humans for the overall benefit of humans. Often, when a “system” becomes a “system” it seeks to put square pegs into round holes, negating alternatives for improvement or revision for its own benefit. When our justice system fails just one person, it fails us all. Ideally, through its humanity, helping just one person rebuild makes us all stronger. That’s why every day, the John Howard Society of Ontario goes to work to keep the humanity in justice. Since 1929, the John Howard Society has been dedicated to a truly effective criminal justice system, one that fosters genuinely safer communities by working directly with individuals and entities that make each community up. We help achieve that goal in a variety of ways and with a suite of programs and activities that we operate on a community-by-community need basis. For example, we provide programs that focus on crime prevention, work with youth and adults at-risk of becoming involved or are involved with the justice system, reintegration services as well as restorative justice. Credible research and policy as well as program development and evaluation have been critical and integral parts of our work. We founded our acclaimed Centre of Research, Policy & Program Development in 2003. Our Centre is the only organization of its kind in Ontario. It facilitates interdisciplinary innovation by combining partnerships with front-line service providers and academically qualified researchers and analysts. See our work about: Unequal Justice – documents the experiences and outcomes of young people in the youth bail system (2021); Solitary Confinement in Ontario Correctional Institutions (2017); Fractured Care – highlighting research that shows incarcerated populations have higher rates of acute and chronic physical and mental health conditions compared to the general population (2016); Poverty Reduction Strategy - highlighting the need for affordable, transition and supportive housing (2020); Broken Record – documenting the Criminalization of Mental Health (2021); The Invisible Burden – the impact of police records and barriers to employment (2018); The Hub – our user friendly site for access by employers, individuals with a criminal record seeking to find employment, the volunteer sector, legal and human resource professionals. Or, check us out in our entirety at johnhoward.on.ca. Each research project promotes evidence-based responses to crime and enhances services that help people thrive, grow, and belong. Our non-partisan research is made readily accessible through our public education work, and has tangible impacts on policy-making in Ontario. We prefer to concentrate on real-world, practical and working solutions to community ills. Your support is not only greatly appreciated, it is essential to the continuation of our work which is making our justice system more effective and humane to each individual and, ultimately, to all our benefit.
