Mission Statement

Promoting the Healthy Development of Children by Empowering Families.

About This Cause

For over 40 years, the KARA Family Resource Centre has stood as a cornerstone in Northeast Edmonton communities, with roots embedded in the visionary efforts of two Social Workers who identified and responded to the unmet needs of parents and children. Our mission revolves around promoting the healthy development of children by empowering families. This commitment guides our organizational goals, emphasizing the importance of ensuring families are safe and healthy, providing programs responsive to diverse needs, facilitating access to community resources, establishing recognition as a well-known community resource, and contributing to the creation of a dynamic and stronger community. Despite the evolving social landscape, KARA remains unwavering in its dedication to serving families and the broader community. KARA's commitment to providing a safe haven for families is especially evident through its primary focus on prevention-based services. Clients often grapple with various social determinants of health, such as low-income and poor socio-economic status, impacting food, housing, and transportation security. Additionally, clients may face social barriers like unemployment, inadequate working conditions, education and literacy comprehension deficiencies, adverse childhood experiences, unsafe environments, limited social supports, and unhealthy behaviors, including addictions and violence, alongside discrimination based on gender, culture, and race. KARA's detailed strategy in assisting these individuals showcases our dedication to employing a strength-based method, empowering community members through diverse educational and support initiatives. At the heart of KARA's mission lies the commitment to eliminating barriers that hinder access to essential needs. The organization ensures that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has access to basic necessities such as emergency food hampers, diapers, formula, bus tickets, and more. Our offerings encompass a wide variety of programs and services, including Parent Education Workshops, Indigenous Children’s Circles, Father Involvement Support Groups, and interactive parent/child programs. Additionally, KARA provides literacy programs, children development assessments and referrals, one-on-one support, and an extensive array of resources and referrals. Beyond the tangible aspects of service provision, KARA's overarching goal is to foster a supportive environment where families and children can not only navigate challenges but truly thrive. This emphasis on resilience and empowerment underscores our commitment to families, irrespective of the adversities they may face.
