Mission Statement

Music TORONTO began as the music program of Toronto Arts Productions, presenting chamber music concerts and recitals at the Town Hall (now the Jane Mallett Theatre) in The St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts. From its first concert in the 1971-72 season, the series established a reputation for high musical quality and considerable popular appeal. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, under artistic leaders Franz Kramer, Costa Pilovachi and Jane Forner, Music at the Centre offered a wide variety of concerts, bringing to Toronto, often for the first time, world-renowned chamber ensembles and soloists. Renamed CentreStage Music in 1983, the concerts continued, also presenting established Canadian artists and nurturing emerging ones. CentreStage Music was instrumental in the presentation of major musical events such as the Bach 300 Festival in 1985 and special events such as musical theatre. In 1987, CentreStage devolved into The Canadian Stage Company and Music TORONTO. The next era of Music TORONTO be

The series maintains a high artistic reputation while being consistently innovative; we are also known internationally for our knowledgeable and interested audience. But more than just a presenter, Music TORONTO has a curatorial function. Our long-term goal is both to preserve this traditional art form and to promote its present and future life. Our programming process involves advice from the widest variety of sources. The Artistic Producer recommends artists and an overall season to the Board. We focus on fulfilling our mandate. We maintain a very direct connection between that mandate, our artistic vision and our programming. For example, in planning our international quartet series, we build a series of 8 concerts from these elements: • the St. Lawrence Quartet and the Gryphon Trio, annually (2). • often including a second Canadian quartet: the Lafayette in 14-15 (1). • presenting a Toronto debut: the Elias Quartet in 14-15 (1). • major American and/or European quartets: St. Petersburg, Belcea, Juilliard in 14-15 (3). • including a American and/or European quartets: Daedalus in 14-15 (1) Our international piano series, 5 concerts, shows the same balance. The 3-concert Discovery series is exclusively Canadian artists. We are especially pleased to bring Trio D’Argento with Barbara Croall’s work Manidoog to Toronto. We take into account a total fee parameter, ensembles’ touring availability, and a balanced schedule (4 concerts in any month is usually too many). We plan to keep operating, to maintain our high artistic standards, and to continue to produce interesting and challenging programmes.
