Mission Statement

The PEI Humane Society is the only shelter on Prince Edward Island responsible for sheltering stray and abandoned companion animals and providing animal protection services for the entire island. The PEI HS works with partner organizations to address animal welfare concerns.

About This Cause

The PEI Humane Society is an incorporated Not for Profit operating since 1974, responsible for providing humane education, animal protection and shelter and adoption facilities for companion animals. The PEIHS operates a medium sized shelter facility for stray and abandoned animals with capacity for 40 dogs and 60 cats, and provides animal protection services under certain contracts. The PEIHS enforces the Dog Act and parts of the new Animal Welfare Act across the island. Our vision is a compassionate society where animals are valued and treated with respect. Our mission is to promote quality of life for companion animals through responsible ownership, successful adoptions, education and enforcement of companion animal welfare legislation in Prince Edward Island. The 5 freedoms of animal welfare inform the work of the organization and are the basis for investigations and decisions regarding care provided to all companion animals. We serve an average of 1500 animals per year through the shelter. One of the primary goals of the PEIHS is to reduce the number of animals in shelter by providing education on prevention of cruelty and good care practices to owners.
