About This Cause

Scadding Court Community Centre (SCCC) was founded in 1975 and is home to extensive programming. Since then, we have become an organization known for high quality social and recreational programming, and for progressive community and social development activities. Over 500 people visit SCCC everyday. Our programming and supports serve local residents within Toronto's downtown neighbourhood of Kensington-Chinatown and are also open to many diverse communities from across the city. Our services are geared toward under-serviced, culturally and racially diverse groups such as newcomers, low-income women, children and families, at-risk youth, people with developmental and/or physical disabilities, and seniors. Markets & Entrepreneurship: We are home to the first shipment container market in Toronto, Market 707. Through our market we've created Business out of the Box, a social franchise model that provides communities with access to affordable retail space city-wide. We've also partnered with private sector and post secondary institutions to introduce training and supports for groups facing barriers to economic self-sufficiency such as our Entrepreneurship Hub – a holistic entrepreneurship training program for newcomers and low-income women. Recreational and Sports Programming: SCCC is equipped with a pool and full-sized gym, as well as a weight room. Scheduled and specialized programs include ball hockey, basketball, volleyball, computer classes and more. We customize our facilities to create inclusive spaces such as women-only weight room hours and swim classes for people living with disabilities. Support for Children, Youth and Families: We offer a wide range of informal and formal supports to promote healthy child development, positive family environments and contribute to safe, secure and happy childhoods. SCCC works with children, families and caregivers at all ages and stages of life. Programs include EarlyOn Drop-In; Family Literacy; March Break and Summer Day Camps; Parenting 1234; School Readiness; and Steps to Learning. Adult & Senior Programming: SCCC is home to numerous programs and supports for seniors and adults living with disabilities. Weekly social and recreational activities are offered to provide an accessible and inclusive environment for all. Urban Agriculture & Food Programs: SCCC seeks to address issues related to food justice and food security through initiatives such as: community garden programs; our greenhouse and Aquaponics system; community kitchen programs; and our diverse food literacy and nutrition programs; and projects that support broader community education. Support for Newcomers: Newcomers of all ages can access settlement services including information and orientation, translations and interpretation, referrals, supportive counselling, conversation circles for immigrants and refugees, and newcomer youth programming. Partnerships: SCCC is also home to several community organizations including: - Alexandra Park Neighbourhood Learning Centre, an adult literacy centre - OASIS Skateboard Factory; an alternative highschool - Sanderson Library (Toronto Public Library branch) - Nonnina's Table; Free Community Meals - Fringe Festival - Partners for Access and Identification (PAID); a free ID clinic for people who are precariously housed/homeless
