Mission Statement

The Speech and Stuttering Institute is a non-profit organization in Toronto, offering speech therapy to children and adults with speech and stuttering challenges. Our treatment approach is founded upon more than 30 years of clinical experience and research in the areas of motor speech/speech sound disorders and stuttering. Our approach to treatment has been recognized worldwide and published in scientific journals and textbooks. We are also involved in the training of Speech-Language Pathologists across the province. The mandate of The Speech & Stuttering Institute is three-fold: To provide clinical service, to educate and train professionals throughout the province, and to engage in cutting edge research to unearth the root causes of speech related challenges in order to find the most effective treatment methods. Our speech therapy programs are made possible through the generosity of donors as well as client fees.

About This Cause

Individuals with speech or stuttering problems are affected throughout their life, socially, educationally, vocationally and emotionally. Here at The Speech and Stuttering Institute we are able to transform the lives of preschoolers, school aged children, teens and adults who seek our services for their often devastating problems with communication. Speech and language skills develop very early in life and are fundamental to children’s social and academic development. According to research “Highly verbal and attentive children go on to become successful students; children with poor language or social skills find school a stressful experience and in many cases go on to develop behavioural, psychological and other health problems.” Speech and stuttering therapy help the health and emotional well being of children as improvements in children’s fluency and speech intelligibility have been linked to improvements in such mental health facets as self-esteem, depression, and self-worth. Clients who have gone through our programs have seen dramatic changes resulting in better overall health and quality of life at home, school, and within their community. The person who stutters often feels isolated, as so few individuals can understand the devastating impact that stuttering can have on one's life. The results of our Intensive Fluency Plus Program for stuttering treatment can often be quite dramatic. Approximately 90% of participants improve significantly in their speech fluency. This is the experience of a young woman who was treated at SSI as a teen and gained the speech skills and confidence to follow her dreams and is now a nurse at Sickkids: “The Speech and Stuttering Institute has had an amazing impact on my life. I have a stutter, and for most of my life this meant I could never trust that I would be able to say what I wanted say, causing immense anxiety for me when it came to speaking. Thankfully, I completed the Intensive Fluency Treatment Program at The Speech and Stuttering Institute. The program taught me reliable techniques to improve my speech, and after a lot of practice and support during and after the program I am finally able to speak fluently!” Our speech and stuttering programs have life changing results. Parents are engaged throughout the therapy process as they play a key role in their child’s communication development. Our programs are ongoing throughout the year. Over 85% of the people we serve are children and youth. The stuttering program is the only specialized and intensive treatment program for stuttering in the greater Toronto area and one of only a handful of such treatment centres worldwide. Despite the fact that 1 in 10 Canadians have a speech, language or hearing problem or that 11% of children in kindergarten have a speech sound disorder, our cause is still relatively unknown and unsupported. Public funding for clinical therapy has been drastically cut in recent years and we are unable to provide affordable care to those in need without the ongoing support of donations. Donations allow us to provide critical treatment to everyone regardless of their ability to pay for the service. Families in who demonstrate financial need and cannot afford our services are provided with subsidies.
