SPENCER HOUSE SENIORS CENTRE

Halifax, Nova Scotia, B3J 1C2 Canada

Mission Statement

Spencer House’s mission is to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors by providing services and programs to enable older adults to live independently, contribute to their community and maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.

About This Cause

Staff and volunteers of Spencer House, many of whom are seniors themselves, strive every day to prevent and mediate loneliness, depression, isolation, and premature institutionalization in Halifax’s aging community. The Centre functions as a mutual aid group, giving members the ability to meet regularly and connect with new friends and community members. Most importantly, many of the activities are organized by seniors themselves. This helps assure that the community affected is directly involved in the decision-making process, which as an important part of maintaining the grassroots goal of the Centre. We offer a daily hot homemade lunch, social activities such as Bingo, music socials, trivia, card games, and karaoke, as well as health & wellness programs and education workshops of interest to older adults. There are health clinics, such as monthly foot care, fall flu clinic, and blood pressure clinics. A tax clinic every spring is offered to help lower income seniors. Spencer House also boasts the Two Houses Theatre Company, a grassroots group of senior actors who write, direct, and perform their plays for audiences at Spencer House, Halifax Regional Library, and local senior apartment buildings and assisted living homes.
