About This Cause

Since 1962, we have been dedicated to by improving the lives of vulnerable people in Toronto and making our communities stronger, happier and healthier. With more than 500 staff and the support of over 1,000 volunteers, we offer services for more than 60,000 people a year and address the most pressing issues in our community: hunger, homelessness, unemployment, isolation, conflict, violence, HIV and AIDS, youth alienation and integration of immigrants. Through your generosity, we offer: • Mental health care and first work experience for at-risk youth • Settlement assistance for struggling newcomer families , LGBTQ+ refugees • Supportive housing, nutritious meals and counselling for homeless adults • Food security, independence, and mental/physical stimulation for low-income seniors Here are just a few voices of the people your gifts help: Theresa Green: “I was addicted to crack cocaine for years, sleeping in drop-in centres or crack houses. St. Stephen’s showed me there were people who really do care about me. Today I’m a peer worker and get to help people like I was helped.” Yo-Sun Son: “When my husband passed away, it was like my whole life stopped. I was shy when I first went to the senior’s program at St. Stephen’s but today, I love talking to people and helping them open up. The program is such a great thing for many lonely seniors.” Tito Maughn: “I was having a tough time getting work. Staff took the time to get to know me and what I want. They opened me up to new ideas, things that help you find and keep a job. I’m still working at the espresso bar today. Things are so much better…a million times!” Jianwei Zheng: “When I came to Canada in 2011, I left everyone behind and didn’t know any English. I was so happy to find staff at St. Stephen’s who speak Mandarin and could help me. I took English classes and can now help others with simple translation. I’m going to open my own hair salon one day.” Sarah Zerahun: “Through St. Stephen’s Youth Services, I found one of the most exciting learning and teaching experiences. I used my own mental trauma to reach out to other young people who feel at odds with school and ever-growing social pressures. Lives were changed in ways I didn’t think possible.”
