Mission Statement

Tarragon Theatre’s mission is to create, develop and produce new plays, and to provide the conditions for that new work to thrive through high-quality development, production and administrative infrastructure. The theatre trains and supports new generation, emerging and established artists, administrators and production personnel in the creation and development, interpretation and production of new work through extensive residencies, flexible play development programs and substantial producing capabilities. To complement its new creations, Tarragon presents new plays from across Canada, revives significant Canadian plays, and produces international work, both contemporary and classical. The theatre has active education/outreach programs, designed to foster an understanding and appreciation of the process of creating new plays. Tarragon’s venue is used extensively to support the creation and development of new works by other theatre artists, through free and discounted space made available for rehearsals, workshops, and productions.

About This Cause

Our 2021/2022 season is one of reflection, growth, and transition. This season we welcome audiences back to the theatre, introduce incoming Artistic Director, Mike Payette, to our community and address this time of change, challenge and opportunity in arts organizations. For the price determined by our audiences as part of our PWYC subscription model, our season will begin with Tarragon Acoustic Reboot in the fall and be followed by the launch of our live season in January 2022. Tarragon Acoustic is a series of select audio plays from the Tarragon canon, which will be available through the Acoustic Portal to stream anytime, anywhere. The 2022 live season will begin with long awaited works interrupted by the closure of in-person theatre. THE RUNNER by Christopher Morris will re-open our Mainspace, followed by the World Premiere of THREE WOMEN OF SWATOW by Chloé Hung in the Extraspace. Theatregoers can expect more World Premieres to include LIGHT by Rosa Labordé, ORPHAN SONG by Sean Morley Dixon, THE HERD by Kenneth T. Williams, in association with The Citadel Theatre and NAC Indigenous Theatre, and OUR FATHERS, SONS, LOVERS AND LITTLE BROTHERS by Makambe K. Simamba, a Tarragon Theatre and Black Theatre Workshop co-production, based on the world premiere production produced by b current. We are thrilled to welcome Mike Payette as incoming Artistic Director this fall, making him Tarragon’s fourth Artistic Director. Mike brings with him a deep understanding of dramaturgy and appreciation for the Canadian play. He looks to honour Tarragon’s history as a home for playwrights, while opening our doors to include multiple forms of creation, allowing artists to explore through the platform of theatre. This new chapter in Tarragon’s history will open our doors to more voices and more collaborators. We have been leaders in the development of Canadian stories since our beginning, thanks to Tarragon founder Bill Glassco’s pioneering vision, and we look to use this strong foundation to pave the way for a new era of Canadian storytelling. We need your help to give stories a stage, an audience, and a home. As Tarragon supporters, you are the cornerstone of the future. Your support helps us provide access and inclusivity to the loyal audiences and artists of the past 50 years while opening our doors to new generation creators and community. It’s an investment in our audience members and the broadening of our artistic capacity like never before. On behalf of all of us, thank you for making this possible.
