Mission Statement

Voice of Albertans with Disabilities actively promotes full participation in society and provides a voice for Albertans with disabilities.

About This Cause

Since 1973, Voice of Albertans with Disabilities (formerly ACCD) has been Alberta's only provincial, cross-disability organization of and for people with physical, mental, sensory, learning, developmental and progressive disabilities. We are a vital and strong organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of people with disabilities. All Voice of Albertans with Disabilities (formerly ACCD) undertakings are guided by three key principles: full participation, accessibility and equity. Principle of Full Participation We are committed to breaking down barriers which prevent society from seeing beyond our disabilities so that we are included in all aspects of life. We will take charge of the social, political and economic decisions that affect our lives. We must be accountable for our actions. We must have choice in the services and supports we require. We acknowledge and accept the dignity of risk. Principle of Accessibility All buildings and facilities must be accessible. Transportation, information and communication services must meet our diverse needs. Principle of Equity We will be vigilant to ensure that our rights and freedoms are upheld. We claim our right to be equal while maintaining our individuality. Consumerism, as it relates to persons with disabilities, has its roots in the independent-living movement of the 1970s and has played an important part in ACCD’s history.
