Mission Statement
Our mission is to break down walls by pushing against boundaries; to create art with and for an audience, examining the marginal, the unexplored and the unforeseen; to articulate a distinct Canadian voice that reflects the complexity of our intercultural society.

OUR MANDATE: Theatre Passe Muraille has a special interest in -producing theatre that is provocative, subversive and joyful -supporting and presenting independent artists and companies, emerging artists, and marginalized voices -modelling new approaches to creation, collaboration, production and stewardship -providing mentorship, expertise, space and opportunity to people, artists and companies -encouraging, enhancing and increasing meaningful interactions between our communities – artists, staff, audiences, neighbourhoods and supporters OUR VALUES: Art‐centric Relevant Collaborative Pioneering Socio-Political Egalitarian Accessible Community oriented OUR HISTORY: Founded in 1968, Theatre Passe Muraille is Canada’s first theatre company developing and producing new Canadian work. Theatre Passe Muraille operates out of a designated historical building; the former Nasmith Bakery and Stables. But true to name, productions also take place “beyond walls” at site-specific locations across Toronto. Theatre Passe Muraille is known for developing innovative and daring Canadian theatre, but we exist to support our communities. From encouraging independent and emerging artists, and multicultural work, to inspiring our staff and artists to work collaboratively, Theatre Passe Muraille works to ensure all voices are represented on our stage. Theatre Passe Muraille is a member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT) and engages professional artists who are members of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association. Theatre Passe Muraille is also a member of the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA) and the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT). Theatre Passe Muraille is funded by the Canada Heritage, Canadian Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, the Toronto Arts Council, and by corporate sponsors and individual benefactors. Community & Audience Engagement Programs Relationships are at the core of our work at TPM and we offer free programming to increase audience participation, dialogue, connectivity and community connections. These programs include: The Prelude, Q&As, Book Club, Meet Marjorie, BUZZ new play development workshops, and others. Accessibility: We strongly believe that making theatre accessible makes it better and leads to more exciting experiences for everyone. We are constantly looking for ways to make our service and space more accessible. Where possible, our access offerings and initiatives for in-persona and digital performances might include: ASL interpretation, Relaxed Performances, Audio Description, Captioning, In-ear translation, among others. Accessible ticket prices: In order to remove barriers in our pricing, we have adopted a Pay-What-You-Can-Afford ticketing model. Single tickets are available at three price points ($5, $25, and $50) so that a wide range of audiences are able to attend our productions. We encourage audiences to make their own choices about what they can afford in order to experience theatre.
