Mission Statement

Canadian Stage is one of the country’s leading not-for-profit contemporary performing arts organizations. The company produces and presents multi-disciplinary work with a focus on emerging performance styles that integrate theatre, dance, film, visual arts and more. Sharing innovative and vibrant performance work from Canada and around the world, we stage an annual season at three Toronto venues (The Bluma Appel Theatre, St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts; The Berkeley Street Theatre; and the High Park Amphitheatre), in addition to running a series of artist training, education and community outreach initiatives.

About This Cause

Operating in the context of culturally vibrant downtown east end Toronto, Canadian Stage aims to participate and lead cultural conversations through its role as a hub and centre for artistic creation, and at the same time transform its management structure to create a different set of processes to meet 21st century leadership demands and the work of ambitious, trailblazing producers, artists and creators. This role includes pragmatic resources, such as providing audition, rehearsal and performance space for Canadian artists and organizations, knowledge-sharing and professional development opportunities for art practitioners, and education, outreach and access programs for youth and communities of all ages. Engaged with the local, regional and national performing arts communities and involvement in sector-wide associations and related initiatives, Canadian Stage actively participates in discussions about emerging trends, concerns and opportunities for artists, companies and arts organizations across Canada. We are committed to expanding and transforming our connectivity so that Canadian Stage will be a beacon for 21st century audiences by re-envisioning the role of a cultural organization with its roots planted in Toronto. The creative process of programming each Canadian Stage season involves key staff under the direction of Artistic & General Director Matthew Jocelyn. Programming is selected to offer varying perspectives on contemporary live performance with the goal of introducing Canada's and world's top performing companies to local artists, while showcasing the work of homegrown local and national treasures and new discoveries. Our never-ending work consists of seeing productions, attending festivals and arts markets, reading scripts, one-on-one meetings with artists, hosting training programs and increasingly commissioning and co-producing new works or translations of existing works. Canadian Stage maintains a long-standing commitment to supporting Canadian artists at all stages of their careers, from professional development programs and initiatives to touring work of Canadian artists worldwide. We seek to prepare artists for the ever-changing field of live performance, providing focused training opportunities in areas where our company holds expertise, including top level management, producing, and directing through the company's acclaimed MFA Directors program and the RBC Emerging Artist program. The companies-in-residence program, which includes Red Sky Performance, Njo Kong Kie, and Why Not Theatre, provides support through space, resources, access to Canadian Stage staff and administrative overhead. Canadian Stage's commitment to education, and community engagement was demonstrated through a range of initiatives that sought to support greater accessibility and inclusion, actively engage and impact youth and foster the creative development of our future artistic leaders. The RBC Emerging Artist program this year involved emerging Canadian artists in a number of knowledge-sharing, skill development and networking opportunities. Education and outreach initiatives, including in-school and in-theatre workshops, free educator preview nights and education resources were complemented by a continued focus on accessibility and inclusion. In the next funding cycle, the company will continue to prioritize access to productions, programs and events for community members of all backgrounds, ages and abilities. The upcoming seasons will feature a greater number of relaxed performances to welcome audience members. This work will be augmented by an accessibility improvement project being undertaken in the summer and fall of 2017 with support from the Rick Hansen Foundation and Enabling Accessibility Fund : a new universal barrier-free washroom, automatic door openers and hearing assistive devices. Through Kids Up Front, an organization that provides access to arts, culture and sporting events to children who would otherwise lack the opportunity, Canadian Stage has been able to facilitate access for children and youth from under-served communities to Shakespeare in High Park. Canadian Stage’s ongoing education and audience development initiatives help the company provide meaningful experiences for audiences and participants. In the coming year, youth and communities of all ages will participate in a range of ancillary educational activities, including pre-show chats and post-show talk backs with artists, critics and journalists. The company continues its long-standing student and youth workshop program with a focus on under-served schools in culturally diverse communities which may lack access to performing arts opportunities, including a series of programs in York Memorial in the Keele and Eglinton neighbourhood. Complementing the implementation of these programs, regular Educator Preview Nights for educators across the GTA before most opening night performances will support outreach. At the same time, an Educator Advisory Committee will provide valuable input into program delivery, including ensuring alignment with the school boards’ equity and inclusion frameworks.
