Mission Statement
The Newman Foundation of Toronto supports the work of the Newman Centre Catholic Mission at the St. George campus of the University of Toronto. We are the Catholic Chaplaincy and Parish located on the St. George campus of the University of Toronto. We bring together and engage university students to become involved in the life of the community and to participate in activities designed to deepen their faith and to share it with those around the campus. Our primary goal is the formation of future Catholic Leaders.
About This Cause
OUR VISION: To inspire in every person a spirit of leadership that embodies the integration of faith and intellect, and the mission to share Christ with the world. OUR Mission: Under the patronage of Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman, the Newman Centre Catholic Mission is a joyful, diverse and inviting university parish. We provide an open home for everyone to grow in wholeness and holiness. OUR VALUES: · We foster lifelong personal relationships with Jesus and radiate God’s love · We advance Catholic leadership, living to serve the church and the world · We encourage intelligent discourse that enriches the heart and mind · We create a space for the contributions of young people · We support vocational discernment for all · We develop peer and inter-generational friendships in community · We participate in the pastoral direction of both the Archdiocese of Toronto and Canadian Catholic Campus Ministry Why do Universities require a Chaplaincy? Statistics show that close to 80% of young adults become unaffiliated with the Churchduring their university years. Many lose their faith in God and in the values they were taught within their families. One of the reasons may be the lack of a supportive Catholic community to allow them to practice their faith and encounter Christ together. At the University of Toronto (U of T), there are approximately 18,000 self-described Catholics. However, students in their final years or those who have already graduated come into the Newman Centre and tell us that they were unaware of a Catholic chaplaincy on campus. Many of them say they would have liked to become involved in the life of a community that shares their faith. The recognition of the need for a campus presence and evangelization comes from these experiences. Our goal is to encourage university students and to call upon them to become Catholic leaders and to support their formation in the Church's missionary identity. OUR PROGRAM gives students the opportunity to become responsible and faithful leaders in the Church and in society. We promote evangelization on the campus these programs: 1) Hub for students - provide coffee, free snack and comfortable gathering place for students to sharing spiritual experience in encountering with God. 2) Mentorship and Faith in the Workplace Seminars 3) Gathered Faith Formation events - weekday programs w/ groups, faculty, women's and men's, volunteers, mental health support 4) Catholic Leadership Formation Bursary – Subsidize students attending conference, mission trip and boarding fees 5) Faith and Reason Lecture Series 6) "ProvertyinAction" Lecture and Action series 7) Social Justice events, such as: Street Patrol, Out of Cold program Our Program has the potential to significantly impact the lives of innumerable students at the University of Toronto, on other university campuses, and in the entire sphere of influence of students who will participate. It is evangelization through relationships, and it calls upon students to become responsible, faithful leaders in the Church and in society.
