Mission Statement
Abiona Centre (Formerly Massey Centre and Humewood House) is a client-centred infant and early childhood mental health organization. We serve two main community-based groups of clients: vulnerable pregnant and parenting adolescents and their children, and families and caregivers from the local community. Our goal is to improve their lives through integrated evidence-informed practice, education and transitional supports.
About This Cause
Since 1901, Abiona Centre has provided housing and supportive services for thousands of pregnant and parenting adolescent mothers and their babies who have nowhere else to turn. The young moms at our centre are often still children themselves, and are already raising children. They are in need of comprehensive support. Our programs focus on stabilizing their lives, and preparing the young moms to live independently with their babies. Last year 76 young moms and babies sought shelter here because they needed a home and the supports to develop parenting and life skills to provide themselves and their children with better lives. We also served over 2,000 people though our childcare, drop-in, and day programs. Profile of our clients: • 100% live in poverty • 100% are from high crime, low income ‘priority’ neighbourhoods • 80% have experienced interpersonal violence • 97% are homeless or under-housed • 94% were high-school drop-outs at intake Our programs provide safe housing and 24/7 supports and treatment to prepare the young moms to live independently. Some of our services include: - Safe housing in our prenatal residence and postnatal transitional housing - Mental health private counselling, and mental health groups - Onsite high school for teen moms - Onsite daycare and programs for babies - Primary healthcare for moms and babies - Life skills programs such as cooking, budgeting, cleaning - Healthy relationships programs - Help with postsecondary education and training - Support with connecting with community resources - Support and subsidies for seeking apartments outside of Abiona Centre for clients ready to transition into living independently
