Mission Statement

Since 1973, Nellie’s (Women’s Hostels Inc.) has been at the forefront of providing shelter and support for marginalized women and their children in the Greater Toronto Area. We are mandated to operate programs and services for women and children who have and are experiencing violence, poverty, and homelessness. Nellie’s works to lessen homeless for women and their children whether the cause is family violence, mental health, or any other reason that results in dealing with the impact from trauma. In addition to providing shelter, our programs are designed to reduce the isolation that often comes with abuse.

About This Cause

About Our Shelter Our core operation is our 36-bed emergency shelter for women and their children who are homeless or escaping violent situations. At Nellie’s, we give them a home where they feel safe and a community where they are supported. Many women and their children arrive with only the clothes on their backs; we give them food, clothing, protection and the support they need, including crisis counselling, to reclaim control of their lives. Our in-shelter programs include: Children’s program, which uses art and creative interventions to provide a safe space for children to express their thoughts and feelings about the trauma they experienced. It gives the children living at Nellie’s a space to be kids again while giving their mothers a few hours to themselves. Housing program, which connects every woman with a Transitional Housing Support worker who is focused on helping them find and maintain safe and affordable housing. Workshop series, which helps women enhance their knowledge on a variety of educational topics, safety and life skills. It also includes our Peer Support Groups, which brings together women who have had similar experiences to talk, listen and share strategies for coping and overcoming violence and oppression. About Our Community Support and Outreach Our Community Support and Outreach (CSO) program office provides after care support and follow-up services to women and their children once they leave the shelter, as well as transitional housing support for women living in the community who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless. Many of the women who turn to Nellie’s face the additional difficulty of suffering from the effects of trauma and mental health issues, substance use or criminalization which increases housing instability and makes finding and maintaining stable affordable housing more difficult. Our community programs include: Weekly food program, which provides both fresh and non-perishable foods to about 80 low-income families in the community. Workshop series, which is similar to our in-shelter program and gives women an opportunity to come together to learn about important legal and educational topics as well as gain helpful everyday life skills.
