Mission Statement

Mission Statement: At Youth Assisting Youth, we create life-changing mentoring experiences that develop the leaders of tomorrow. We are passionate about cultivating supportive, transparent and enriching youth mentoring opportunities.

About This Cause

During the COVID-19 pandemic Youth Assisting Youth's programs never stopped and our doors never closed. We quickly adapted all mentoring and program activities for virtual delivery, and created several new programs to keep our youth and families connected and supported during this critical time. For 44 years, Youth Assisting Youth (YAY) has supported at-risk and newcomer youth, ages 6-15, by matching them with trained One-to-One volunteer youth mentors, ages 16-29. We support youth from low-income, single-parent and newcomer families, as well as youth with mental health issues, learning disabilities and other complex challenges. Our One-to-One Youth Mentoring Program directly address the issues of youth homelessness, academic failure, mental health, delinquency, substance abuse, bullying and more, by offering high risk youth a consistent caring relationship when they need it most - during their pivotal adolescent years. Volunteer youth mentors spend 3 hours per week with their mentee for a minimum of 1 year, providing consistent guidance, specialized support and a positive role model. Youth Mentees benefit from increased resiliency, confidence and skills, as well as reductions in mental health symptoms associated with anxiety, depression and isolation. Youth Mentors also benefit from increased critical thinking skills, job/career skills, leadership, confidence and empathy as they make a profound difference in the life of their mentee. In addition to our community-based Mentoring Program, we also offer provide Group Mentoring activities, events and program, including our Tutoring Program, Girls Empowerment Program, Boys Empowerment Program and a wide range of group activities and events such as movie nights, games nights, ping pong, basketball and more. During the COVID-19 pandemic all program activities were adapted for virtual delivery in order to keep all of our youth and their families connected and supported. All program activities are currently being delivered in a blended format of virtual and in-person delivery when permitted.
