About This Cause
Thanks to generous volunteer and donor support, Hospice Peterborough offers quality support to individuals and families living with or affected by life-threatening illness and grief at no cost to those who need it. Guided by a philosophy of compassion, respect and autonomy, the organization’s team of specially trained staff and volunteers work together to care for the whole person, improve quality of life and enhance comfort. When individuals and families come to Hospice, they realize they are not alone. Our community has another choice for end-of-life care. Community-based hospice palliative care is qualitatively different than care in a hospital. The setting of care in the hospice will be homelike, peaceful, and comfortable. We will provide compassionate, family-centered care that focuses on pain and symptom management and emotional and spiritual support, delivered by highly qualified health care professionals and volunteers. The demographics of our city, one of the oldest in the country, require a hospice where this can be provided around the clock. In the past 5 years the demand for Hospice programs and services has grown by 136% and is expected to continue to grow as Peterborough is one of the fastest growing communities in Canada. Last year Hospice staff and volunteers helped a record number of individuals and families – all at no cost because of your donations: • 1,767 individuals received support • 915 new referrals • 493 group sessions offered • 26 sessions for children and teens • 5,730 people participated in groups • 21,382 client interactions with our staff and volunteers • 578 education sessions attended by 2,308 health-care professionals • 20 Community Education sessions attended by 870 individuals
