Mission Statement

The Coastal Jazz and Blues Society is the producer of the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival, year-round concert series in Vancouver, and eduction and outreach initiatives in BC.

About This Cause

The Coastal Jazz and Blues Society was founded in 1985 and incorporated in 1986 as a non-profit society. Over the subsequent decades, the Society has become one of BC’s largest arts organizations and the presenter of the province’s largest annual cultural event and non-profit live music festival, the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival. In addition, the Society presents an annual year-round concert season (October – April) of small and large-scale concerts, including the Bright Moments Series of cutting edge creative music, and extensive education initiatives, including Cool School: Get Hip to Jazz. The Society’s mandate: “To champion tradition and innovation in Jazz and creative music; to be a cultural cornerstone in our community, and the North American West Coast’s pre-eminent producer of experiences that inspire and engage artists and audiences.” The Society’s mission: To connect, transform, inspire and nurture artists and audiences through the joy, passion, and power of jazz. The Society’s core values remain the furthering of jazz and its related genres as an art form and presentation for that purpose, sustainability of the artists practicing these forms and responsibility for offering artists as many performance opportunities for public performance as possible, education and outreach activities to music students and to the community, and the use of Society platforms to benefit the community to the greatest extent possible. Each year at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, Coastal Jazz presents over 1400 musicians in 35 venues throughout Vancouver and the North Shore. In 2017, the Festival attracted 590,000+ people, the majority attending the 150+ free shows (out of over 300 concerts), on stages in downtown Vancouver and at David Lam Park, as well as at Granville Island during Canada Day, and elsewhere throughout the Festival, making the Festival the second largest free music program in Canada.
