About This Cause

Founded in Montreal (Quebec, Canada) in 1980, Info-Cult: Centre for Assistance and for the Study of Cultic Phenomena, is a nonprofit charitable organization. Financed by the Quebec government’s Ministry of Health and Social Services as well as by contributions from individual donors, the organization provides help and information about groups, their ideologies and their structures. It houses one of the most important documentation centres specialized in this area. Being the only organization of its kind in Canada, Info-Cult also offers support and guidance services to former members of groups or their loved ones. Different terms are commonly used to describe these groups: cults, extremist groups, radical groups, coercive groups. Info-Cult provides an analysis that goes beyond these labels to help people become aware of what they have experienced in a group and, in particular, to better understand the worldview and the functioning of the group. Info-Cult offers: - Information on different groups, including cultic groups ; - Support to people who are dealing with difficult experiences and challenges with regard to integrating or reintegrating into society, as the case may be ; - Help in understanding the various daily experiences in a group (relationship among its members, leader/member relationship) and, if necessary, when leaving a group. The situations that present themselves are often complex and simple responses are rare. Thousands of groups exist in the world and many of them foster an enriching experience, while others give rise to experiences of being controlled or victimized. Info-Cult's approach is to analyze situations on a case-by-case basis in order to better understand the individual's experience and, if necessary, to identify the problematic patterns that, for example, go against the Canadian and Quebec Charters of Human Rights and Freedoms and the law. Since its founding, Info-Cult benefits from the close collaboration of its Board of Directors, which is made up of professionals in the fields of law, education, business and mental health with the support of numerous other volunteers. Supported by an international network, Info-Cult has, for over forty years, contributed to an important mission of informing and educating the public about the cultic phenomenon. Over the last forty years, there has been an increase in the number of religious, spiritual, political and psychological groups claiming to help people achieve their full potential. From Info-Cult's beginnings in 1980, we've been educating the public about cults, new religious movements and related phenomena. As the number of groups grows, Info-Cult also grows in its wealth of knowledge and resources. Often individuals become worried when someone they care about is involved with a group that is unfamiliar to them. We can help. Info-Cult is the only group of its kind in Canada. We are a registered non-profit, charitable organization.
