Mission Statement

The Word On The Street champions reading and writing in Canada through a free annual festival and year-round literary programming that celebrates storytelling, ideas, and imagination.

About This Cause

The Word On The Street is a beloved, community-focused literary festival that celebrates Canadian and Indigenous authors, creatives and storytellers. Our two-day festival is an open-air, free event rooted in the belief that everyone in our community should have access to engage with and be empowered by Canadian literature. For the last 35 years, we have remained free of cost through a global pandemic, economic crises and major government funding cuts that have impacted the Arts and Cultures spaces. By remaining free to attend, we continue to gather crowds of six figures, showcasing how important and vital affordable literary programming is to the community. We serve a vendor marketplace of nearly 200 local organizations including major and independent publishing houses, magazines, authors, bookstores, and arts, education, and literary organizations. We host over 100 authors, creatives and storytellers each year during our festival weekend and support year-round programming with a multitude of community partners. Perhaps most importantly, we create a hub for tens of thousands of readers and writers to come together and connect via their passion for the written word. Major government funding cuts have left a long-standing impact on not only WOTS but the entire Art and Culture space. We have watched as many vibrant festivals, art spaces and organizations closed their doors or reduced programming to survive the past few years. The Word On The Street remains one of the few free and accessible festivals in the province. Through the dedication and passion of the last three decades of WOTS staff, board, and volunteers, The Word On The Street remains Canada’s largest free book and magazine festival. Your support is key in preserving free and accessible literary spaces, ensuring that Canadian and Indigenous voices are heard, and protecting CanLit’s past, present and future.
